[See Bug 1084290: Comment 8 from Maria S] Could we consider changing the behavior to expanding the group when an icon is dragged in to it? Something like this: Suggested behavior: 1. Long press app to enter edit mode. 2. Drag app from expanded group and hover over collapsed group. 3. Collapsed group expands under the hovering app and the user can place the app icon within the new expanded group. 4. User drops icon to confirm placement. 5. Group stays expanded (not sure about this one). If it's not doable that's fine, I know Chris mentioned there may be some animation issues here but it would be worth trying.

Just a note, in my opinion, this is a "UX Most Wanted". If we can't do this for 2.2, then let's be sure it gets in the next release. In edit mode, dropping an app icon into a collapsed group that has more than 6 icons, is highly likely to cause user uncertainty about the where the icon went, as it disappears with no visual feedback. User may wonder, "did it drop into this group? or did it stay in the original group i dragged it from? Where did the icon go?". As above, UX recommends: 1. Long press app to enter edit mode. 2. Drag app from expanded group and hover over collapsed group. 3. Collapsed group expands under the hovering app and the user can place the app icon within the new expanded group. 4. User drops icon to confirm placement. 5. Group stays expanded.

I'm unassigning this for now as I'm certain I won't get it done in the 2.2 timeframe (I also don't think it can be done nicely without some major optimisations to the homescreen and/or Gecko, so sticking it on the back-burner).

Should we close this?

Yes, we're definitely not going to do this at this point and app-grouping won't (probably) exist in the exact same way in new homescreen.
