I'm not convinced that this feature makes sense as something for the Addon Manager. I've landed a patch to the lightsaber branch that allows the addon manager to open the hacker marketplace, but the point of that is to make it easy to find and install new addons.

I don't think we're anywhere close to being able to upload addons, and even if we were, I thought that was a feature for the customizer not a feature for the addon manager.

If you've got an addon you installed from someone's website, it seems wrong to upload that addon to the hacker marketplace if you're not the author of it. From the description, it sounds like that is what this bug is asking for.

For the customizer app, we're just allowing users to publish addons that they have just created. That makes sense. But allowing the use to re-publish addons they've obtained from somewhere else seems like a mis-feature.

Personally, I think this bug should be marked INVALID. Or maybe it should just have the summary changed to [Customizer].

Candice and Jacqueline: what do you think?

The idea I had behind the Add-on Manager was to have one place where you could easily find and install add-ons, but also be able to easily delete and share them from a single location. It might be a bit cumbersome for users to have to go through the customizer to each app that they want to share an add-on from.

I would agree that sharing other people's add-ons would not be acceptable. Would the name of the developer always be with the add-on itself, even when shared? One option is to restrict the user from sharing add-ons through the hacker marketplace that they have downloaded rather than created but I'm not sure if this is ideal. Is this something that we can do?

In terms of sharing through the Hacker Marketplace, I was hoping that the share activity could link to a screen that the user could upload the add-on via github to the marketplace. I am not overly familiar with how this process works so flagging Michael as he can probably help out here more than I can.

Michael, is there something you can recommend here in terms of linking from the add-on manager (or possibly customizer) to the hacker marketplace?

Right now, the only way to add apps/add-ons to the Hacker Marketplace is by creating a github pull request. Allowing any app (whether it is the add-on manager, customizer, or even the hacker marketplace itself) to automatically submit a PR based on criteria like github url, github user, package url is prohibitively difficult (ie. more than a week of work I think). There are many things to think about here like how to do github authentication, how to validate ownership, what the submission UI looks like, etc. So we should only invest in doing this if hacker marketplace becomes very successful I think.

Descoping this.

This is a Settings part for triggering sharing activity.

Reading through the comments it seems there is no clear spec for this feature. Cancel the review request for this time being.
