This is a tracker to remind me (as if!) to spend a couple days profiling
content model construction to remove any excess obvious fat from the process.

Marking this task as "done". I've gone through and cut string and
attribute usage to a bare minimum using the "current design" (that is, more
cutting will involve some redesign -- I'd rather consider bugs like that
separately). I've gotten rid of obviously stupid stuff. Anyway, this'll
doubtless surface again in a different form, but the low-hanging fruit has been
plucked.
