Currently, we have favicon and the lock icon. For Passwords work, adding a key icon would indicate a saved login or a login form detected. Three icons is too much. A few options: - Use a non-icon notification for http/https (faded/strikethrough for http, or possibly accessibility-friendly color) - Using icons in a unified doorhanger in a split-pane style

Three icons > is too much. We could remove the favicon. ;) (bug 1111818) One of Lucas' parting wishes was to reduce the number of changing states in the toolbar during page load so if this item is expected to appear and disappear based on page state, I would like to push against putting it directly on the toolbar.
I'm commandeering this bug to focus on the UX auditing of the Site ID, Site Security, and the upcoming Passwords and Tracking Protection icons. We'll need to figure out a great way to: 1) Prioritize which we show and, 2) Possibly display more than 1 icon ... and probably some other things

Posting a WIP. The idea here (as discussed in SFO), is to leverage the URL pref and use https vs http as the indicator of Site Security. Thereby, freeing up the icon space for displaying the 2nd most important icon in any given situation (or none if there isn't one). If there's more than 1, then we could use a badge to show how many are "hidden", but active.
Note that not all users know the difference between http and https and I'd believe the lock to be a little more understandable. Also, the hit area for "where is the site identity information" could be unintuitive (why do I click the favicon or arbitrary key icon to see the site security information?). It might be good to add a "site identity information" item to the toolbar menu, perhaps under tools?
The site identity information as we currently falls short of what it could do. We only serve information on sites with security certificates. I filed bug 729493 to make them more meaningful but it seems that fell through the cracks. I believe even our site security indicator, within the site identify information doorhanger, would do a far better job by using a scale that provides context rather than simply using a large man. To be more on topic, it's important to bear in mind that adding an icon to show that a password for such a site is quite a hazardous idea. Once you do that, you're battling with connotations as to whether or not the site the secure. It's also probably worth digging through the old desktop bugs that dealt with removing the key icon around Firefox 4 as to pro's/con's of that. If there was an insistence to go forward this, could I pimp the proposal of bug 1074220 (attachment 8573886 [details]) as that would allow us a bigger location bar due to the increased height of the action bar and thus we may be able to vertically stack icons as a result. That said, I really don't think we should be adding complexity to the action bar.
Leaving a note here for myself, Desktop is thinking about using 1 icon to unify/rule them all - an (i) next to the lock.
