It seems that having a tab open to a non-encrypted site will prevent SSL entryption from being turned on in a second tab in the same window. Reproduce: Start mozilla Go to https://www.firstunion.com/FrontLineLogin.html without any tabs Note that View -> Page info -> security says encryption is enabled. Open a second tab and go to the same url, now there are two tabs, both with encryption enabled. Now, replace the contents of the first tab with freshmeat (http://freshmeat.net). Now, notice that the second tab no longer has the lock icon, and View -> Page Info -> Security says the connection is not encrypted. Similar results can be had by starting mozilla, going to freshmeat first, then opening a second tab and going to the https url. Mozilla says that no encryption enabled in the second tab.
