User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/43.0.2357.130 Safari/537.36 Steps to reproduce: Thunderbird automatically updated to 38.0.1 on start, then crashed immediately on start, no GUI or download of messages, asks to submit a report to Mozilla, which I have. I went into safe mode, removed all plugins and restarted. Still crashed in the same way. Actual results: Only can start in safe mode. I uninstalled Thunderbird and Mozilla update service, crashed on start after install same way. I removed profiles from appdata, uninstalled and reinstalled, same crashing result on start. I have seen some mention of proxy plugins having trouble, but i never had that, just flat folders, phoenity, enigmail, foldertree, expression search, gcontact sync, gcalendar tab. This is Windows 8.1, also runs Norton Security. Another machine I had set up the same, but has not been allowed to go to 38.0.1 (is 31.7.0) still runs fine Expected results: Start no crash.
I found mention of hardware acceleration sometimes causing problems. Disabling that in advanced settings makes Thunderbird stable to start. This is a Lenovo Thinkpad W520 with a Quadro 1000M graphics chip. So, some kind of incompatibility there it seems

I should test forcing thunderbird to use my nvidia to see if it crashes.

Adam, if you turn on HWA using current version 45 do you still see this problem?

(In reply to Wayne Mery (:wsmwk, NI for questions) from comment #5) > Adam, if you turn on HWA using current version 45 do you still see this > problem? Hi yes, crash log sent, though the behavior is different. Before, it crashed on Thunderbird start. Now it starts fine and can read emails. It crashes if I go back to Tools->Options, don't need to change anything in options->advanced, but when I press OK, it reliably crashes AdapterDeviceID: 0x0126 AdapterDriverVersion: 9.17.10.4229 AdapterSubsysID: 21d117aa AdapterVendorID: 0x8086 Add-ons: flatfoldertree%40hdgadgets.com:1.1.2,hide-local-folders%40alexcabal.com:1.04,search-as-list%40pso.ebr:3.1,gContactSync%40pirules.net:2.0.11,%7Ba62ef8ec-5fdc-40c2-873c-223b8a6925cc%7D:3.1,%7Be2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103%7D:4.7.3,%7B847b3a00-7ab1-11d4-8f02-006008948af5%7D:1.9.5,%7B972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd%7D:45.3.0 AddonsShouldHaveBlockedE10s: 1 AvailablePageFile: 15708782592 AvailablePhysicalMemory: 13336588288 AvailableVirtualMemory: 3429007360 BIOS_Manufacturer: LENOVO BlockedDllList: BreakpadReserveAddress: 66256896 BreakpadReserveSize: 67108864 BuildID: 20160825102941 CrashTime: 1474297926 EMCheckCompatibility: true FramePoisonBase: 00000000f0de0000 FramePoisonSize: 65536 GraphicsCriticalError: |[0][GFX1-]: RenderTargetViewNeedsRecreating|[1][GFX1-]: VendorIDMismatch 0x8086 0x10de InstallTime: 1473885355 Notes: AdapterVendorID: 0x8086, AdapterDeviceID: 0x0126, AdapterSubsysID: 21d117aa, AdapterDriverVersion: 9.17.10.4229 Has dual GPUs. Thanks for the info. Several nvidia-related fixes appear in version 50, which is available in beta. And the core team is continuing to fight for more stability in graphics, so more fixes should appear in subsequent versions. So, it may be wishful thinking, but I'm wondering if your crashes also happen with beta from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/channel/ And if it does happen, please you post the crash ID. see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/mozilla-crash-reporter#w_viewing-crash-reports
Hi, I tried moving to 50.0b3, re-enabled hardware acceleration. It is nearly fixed it seems. It doesn't just crash on start, but it did crash once after a couple minutes, though this is beta, perhaps from some other cause, the crash report is bp-d2e1038a-6674-4ccb-9697-059f92161110 It is otherwise operating normally in the background now for a longer period than last crash without a repeat. I'll leave hardware acceleration on for a while, and I'll add another crash report here if it reoccurs. Thanks,

I ran it several more hours yesterday, and at least no more crashes after that first one,
Thanks Adam. That one one crash makes me leery. Have you had any more crashes since then? Hi, that still just crashed that one time, not since. Still runs nearly daily without issue. Thanks
