Do you get the same error as bug 1186664?
Does the problem occur if you have WINDOWS started in safe mode?
- win7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7

When you select youremail@aol.com after adding it nothing happens (should start syncing). You have to close and reopen Thunderbird so it syncs for the first time.

So you did not have trouble creating the account?
The problem was only getting new mail - if the account is pop you had to restart Thunderbird to get new mail?

If I click inbox it syncs the account for the first time, but selecting only youremail@server.com doesn't. Restarting I don't have to select Inbox for it to sync.

Yes it is. imap.aol.com at port 993; SSL/TLS; normal password

If so, your problem may be bug 1196662 if your problem started to occur from Tb 38.2.0.
bug 1196662 : Regression by Tb 38.2.0.
problem looks resolved by paatch for Bug 1182831(typo in autosync.js) and autosync is feature for imap.
And, your string of "pop" in bug summary is sufficiently misleading(rather Wrong).
