User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:39.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/39.0 Build ID: 20150630154324 Steps to reproduce: I click on the link: http://www.bluegrassonthetube.com/page669.html directing to a video Actual results: Firefox opens the site, displays the page but the video window stays black and does not start (no play button). Reloading doesn't help. Expected results: The video window should show the starting image of the video and a play arrow to be able to start the video
What happens when you watch video on youtube ? the link you provided contains a video that is fetched form youtube with API. I am not sure about this issue to be a playback or API issue, still trying to move to a more appropriate component. Move back if I am wrong.

I get "A plugin is needed to display this content".
I cannot watch the video on youtube as there is no direct link . The problem is that most of the time, I get the black window but every once in a while (I can't figure out why or how or when), the window shows the starting image and the play button as it should and I can watch the video. Restarting Firefox or the computer doesn't help.
This sounds like a GPU problem. Can you please copy and paste your about:support information into this bug? Open Help menu > Troubleshooting Information menu item > Copy Text to Clipboard button. Here is the YouTube link for that embedded video. Just click the embedded video's "YouTube" button and the player will open the youtube.com URL in a new tab. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nd3WnBwxCcM
Hi Chris, Usually, when I can't see the video in Firefox, I copy the link to Opera and watch it there but it's not the way it should be ;-) Now today, I had a link for another video: http://www.bluegrassonthetube.com/page685.html and it worked fine in Firefox. This is puzzling me ! Anthony, do you recognize chriselsass' GPU or driver version as one we've had problems?

Chris - if it were the GPU you would get sound but no video. YouTube is working elsewhere but there is something broken with the embedding. Chriselsass - do you still get a black frame if you disable Flash in about:addons ?
Flags: needinfo?(ajones)
Antony - I've disabled both Shumway and Flash and I have a grey warning saying that this plugin is disabled (hey, that computer is smart ;-). When I re-activate Flash, I have a grey warning saying that the Adobe Flash plugin has crashed. If I activate Shumway, whether Flash is activated or not, I get the black window. And yet, with certain links from the same site, the video works fine. As I save these links, sometimes, when I get back to ones that were not working, they do work but the next day, the black window is back. I understand that if I always had the black window, something was missing. But I don't get it if it works part of the time. Thank you for your care !
Looks like this is actually a Flash crash and something not supported by Shumway. I haven't looked at the site source code but I'm guessing it is a object embed rather than an iframe embed. See https://developers.google.com/youtube/player_parameters
Component: Audio/Video: Playback → Plug-ins
Antony - I think I have found a way around (at least up to now): I have disabled the Shumway extension, activated the Shockwave Flash plugin, then went into the Shockwave Flash options and disabled Adobe Flash protected mode. I don't know how risky this situation may be but I'm aware of it and have other protections. Of course, this leaves a lot of unanswered questions such as: Why doesn't Shumway (a theoretical Flash replacement) work ? Why can't I see the videos in this Flash protected mode ? I had told you that sometimes the videos were working and sometimes not. I guess that I may have tried (without really pointing it out) to disable this protected mode and "suddenly" the videos were fine. I also guess that when you update the Shockwave Flash plugin (which happens rather often), the update forces the protection mode to the ON position and then, after the update, the videos "suddenly" don't work anymore. All these are suppositions, so we may leave this bug report on for a little while before setting it to solved.
(In reply to chriselsass@yahoo.fr from comment #10) > Why doesn't Shumway (a theoretical Flash replacement) work ? It is still experimental. > I had told you that sometimes the videos were working and sometimes not. I > guess that I may have tried (without really pointing it out) to disable this > protected mode and "suddenly" the videos were fine. There are some hangs associated with Flash protected mode. Ultimately the web site needs to fix their YouTube object embed.
Antony, no issue since I disabled the Adobe Flash protected mode. Everything's fine and I can watch all the videos, so I guess we can consider this case as solved. Thank you very much for your help and support.

Disabling Flash protected mode increases the security risk to you. You can mitigate it by enabling chick to play (selecting "Ask to Activate") on Flash.
