When receiving mail, the timeout before an error message is displayed (cannot
connect to server) is too short. I found no way to change this timeout.
Especially on machines with slow dial-up connections, or such connecting e.g.
using Nat32 on another machine, I receive the error message every time I start
the mail client.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Find a machine that takes a long time to connect to the internet
2. Make sure "Check for new mail at startup" is enabled
3. Make sure the machine is currently disconnected, and set to auto-dial
4. Start the mail client
Actual Results: Received the error message that the client could not connect to
the mail server.
Expected Results: Should have waited until the connection is established.
(It worked with Netscape 4.76)
I suggest that either the timeout should be made longer, or it should be
possible to change it.

yeah, as I'm on dialup, Netscape 6.2.1 is a dog when these come up, Not sure the
exact order here, but it opens the mail start page, checks any newsgroups for
messages if they are defaulted to open and if the Netscape server is really slow
Mail may not connect and this dialog pops up. Which it does feel like its out
of place when it comes up.

I am currently experiencing this bug with Mozilla 1.4 mail and news client. In
fact it is bad enough that I will have to change to another mail client.
I really feel that the timeout for checking mail on (in this case) POP accounts
needs to be able to be specified by the user, if not in the actual preferences
dialog, then by modifying the prefs file itself.

It looks to me that bug 189363 is about the same issue. And it has some work in
progress.

Outlook Express doesn't just show an error message on timeout, but it asks the user if he'd like to wait further or to cancel. Would be nice to have that in Mozilla products, too.

(In reply to comment #0 thru comment #10)
mail.pop3_response_timeout(default=45 sec) was implemented and was modifiable.
This was included in Thunderbird 1.0.x, although UI was not available.
After that, mailnews.tcptimeout(default=60 sec) was introduced ( mail.pop3_response_timeout was removed ), and UI was also implemeted ( Tools/Options, Advanced, General ), and was included in Thunderbird 1.5.0.0.
See Bug 277071 and Bug 278144.
So this bug is already WORKSFORME, or FIXED by other bugs, if connection is TCP/IP over dial up connection or usual TCP/IP over LAN/ADSL with router type ADSL modem.

Martin F., your request is different from this bug's issue.
Please file new bug with Severity=Enhancement, if and only if similar enhancement is not requested yet, after searching Bugzilla well.
