Seems to be a platform issue: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=29423
The last comment on this bug states it was resolved in November 2014 which matches up with the release of Android 5.
Still looking for a fix!

I was also able to reproduce the issue on LG Nexus 4 (Android 5.1) on both normal and private browsing.

STR: New the new tabs tray layout you can swipe down on a thumbnail. Nothing happens (it won't close the tab), but if you do it enough on a few different thumbnails, you'll get into a state where the thumbnails don't get "unselected".

This doesn't need to track for a release, but this looks bad, so we should try to fix it.
Martyn, do you know what would be involved in fixing this? Could it be a mentor bug?

I can reproduce this with multitouch. I can even close tabs just by touching multiple tabs:

Set to block "tabs-tray-v3".
