Currently, if a person goes to https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/new/ depending upon their locale they're redirected to a specific language version of Firefox. For example, in my case, it goes to https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/ Most people I know do not change their locale from the default (en-US) to a more appropriate locale for them. So, they all inveitably end up at the en-US page for firefox download when they're trying to download firefox. Now, that page has a link to download firefox (which's the en-US version) and also, on the bottom a link called "Systems & Languages". The latter leads to other languages of Firefox. Considering that we spend so much effort into l10n, I think that "Firefox in your language" should be given more prominence on the download page. In India there are many languages spoken and even people attending one event could be speaking 2-3 languages. Imagine I'm asking people to download firefox and telling them that it's available in their own language. If the default download page made it easier for users to find different language versions, I will have an easier time giving them links. Consider Bug #1068446 for that matter. Ideal resolution: Just under the "free download" button there should be another similar button (maybe slightly less prominent) which says "download in your language" or something like that. tl;dr - People almost always download the en-US version of Firefox because the other language versions are difficult to discover in natural course.

I like Google's idea: https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/desktop/ Clicking "Download Chrome for another platform" shows a modal dialog to select a platform. Possible solution for /firefox/new/ would be: * Show the currently selected platform (Bug 798836) and language like before * Replace "Systems & Languages" with "Download Chrome for another platform/language" or "Other Systems & Languages" * Show a modal dialog when the link is clicked (JavaScript required) Thoughts?

I like Ubuntu's idea of a dropdown too. http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop There's a select input which says "64-bit (recommended)" which's selected by default. But the user can see all options and choose whatever they want. But that might also make things look very complicated.

We're currently testing some suggestion to help fix this in Bug 1295181.

It depends on how clever we want to be. Having the button is a good idea for sure but one could be even smarter and amend the default selection by totally ignoring the locale of the OS or browser and going by county IP. So let's say a user visits the/a download page and the IP puts them into India. The clever thing to do would be for us to have a list which says "for India, the following locales are most interesting: en-US, Hindi, Oriya, Malayalam etc etc". We'd have to create such a list, especially to account for cross-border languages but there are not so many locales in Fx. As a fallback (i.e. when the country cannot be determined), we can show the full list and/or the button with "Other platforms and languages"
