When Firefox tries to visit a page while network connectivity is unavailable it displays about:neterror with a number of troubleshooting tips (#2 indicates to check for network connectivity). Safari displays an error page that suggests to open the reading list in order to spend time productively while offline. Chrome displays an error page with a mini game about a jumping dinosaur. Anecdotal evidence suggests that users who find out about this easter egg love it and go out of their way to play the game.
Apart from the fact that the dinosaur should have been our thing, it seems appropriate to follow their lead and be more whimsical in our error page in this case. Something unintrusive but entertaining if found, could work for our users too.
