With the most recent Windows 10 update, Firefox seems to crash my GPU more often. Symptoms: black browser window, notification from windows saying that the Intel HD graphics driver has been restart. Hardware is 2015 Razer Blade 14. HD Graphics 4600 with nVidia GTX970M. Intel driver version is 10.18.15.4256

Do you have crash reports you can share? Which Windows update did you install? Does rolling back the update resolve the stability issue?

I don't know which update, as they install automatically, just noticed in the last couple of weeks, the GPU crashes and restarts when running firefox. Bas, could use some advice here. This is happening a lot and I worry this is affecting the genpop.

Does resizing the window help with the black screen? Is there a particular workflow that causes this? We've seen Windows updates cause the uptick in driver crashes before, not specific to Firefox (as in, Windows Explorer causes it). We could be hitting a threading bug in Windows when it comes to recovering from the driver restarts, but we don't have good handle yet on what's causing the resets.

The errors in comment 12, etc. are just indicative of the device reset, so not likely a cause of the problem.

Nick, if you set gfx.direct2d.disabled to true (in about:config) and restart Firefox, does it get any better?

Last time around, this was tracked in bug 1194335, then another Windows update came along and improved things.

If this is the same as the problem that shows up on SurfaceBook hardware, we can reproduce it in a standalone application and have sent a bug report to Microsoft. In the meantime, we may have a workaround.
