It would be nice if a user could use ProfileManager to move an existing profile
to a different location (drive:directory).
This would be useful if the user wants to move the profile to a faster disk, or
to save space on the existing location.
This can be done manually, but for the less knowledgable users in the Netscape
community, such a feature would save a lot of hassle for support staff.

This is a good idea, but would need
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=125721 to be implemented first,
since there is no way to specify the alternate profile location?

I don't think this depends on bug # 125721 as that is about passig an arguement
to Mozilla on startup as to the location of the profile.
This bug is more about haveing an automated way to move the profile directory
and update the related pref.js settings that refer to the hard coded profile
location.

Maybe I am completely wrong here, but isn't prefs.js *part* of the profile
directory? How can one move the profile directory (under linux it
always is ~/.mozilla) and still have mozilla be able to use it?
If I want to move .mozilla to a different disk there is no way to
tell mozilla where to find it AFAIK.

You are, of course, absolutely correct.
Now, I think what I did was to edit mozregistry.dat (which on a Win98 system
resides in the Windows directory) to point to the new location. Now, the file
isn't really intended to be edited, so I had to be very careful to not break any
of the other data in the file.
I don't know if Linux has such a file, nor where it would reside.

Well that bug has OS Win98, but it should be changed to all since this
is probably an issure for all OS (dont know about the mac though).
I cant change that though since I dont have the auth.
Depends on: 125721

To me this seems to be a dupe of
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=77924
Or did I miss something?

To me too, though this bug has a better description and better comments.
It also has the dependency on bug 125721 - this info should get moved over
to 77924 if duping against it.

Yes, it is a dup.
I've added the dependancy to the other bug, and I will mark this as a dup. I
will also move some comments that I see as critical, feel free to move anything
I miss.
