To quote Ben Goodger's description for Bug #41526 :
"Just about every (windows) browser since the dawn of time has allowed the user
to set an image as their desktop background. Since going down the XP road, we
seem to have lost this ability, which is a shame, as this was a feature I used ;)"
Although it is not a feature that I have ever used, I know **a whole lot** of
end users who seem to think it is a necessity.
Anyway, Joe Hewitt recently fixed that bug which was for the Windows platform only.
However, since I see no reason why this should be a Windows only feature, I am
opening this bug to request that it also be implemented for the Mac platform as
well (perhaps another bug should be filed for Linux?).
The opposition to Bug 41526 always seemed odd to me, but now that it is an
implemented feature, I would think it even more odd for people to argue that it
should be a Windows only feature. This is mostly a feature for the average
non-technical web surfers who do not necessarily know how to manually download a
picture and make it their wallpaper; there are a lot of Mac users who fall into
this category. Since those end users are not the type to follow Mozilla
development and file bugs in Bugzilla, here I am.
I realize that this would be a low priority RFE, but I think that it is also an
enhancement that many Mac users would welcome. It adds a feature that Windows
users have that Mac users do not have. Since most Mac web browsers do not
currently have, it is also a feature that could score points for Mozilla in
comparison to IE and others.

Checked that there are no dupes. Seems like a reasonable request.
We should save the image to the current user's Pictures folder (at least under
Mac OS X) and then set the wallpaper to point to the newly saved picture. Will
try to look up some info from Apple on how to do this.

Yes thank you! I have been a Windows user since windows 3.1 days. I recently
bought a TiBook (about a month ago) and one of the first things I did was
download Mozilla so I could run it on OS X. The second thing I went to do was
right click on an image to make it my background. Imagine my disappointment when
I found that the "Set as Wallpaper" item was missing from the context menu of my
favorite image. :-(

To save some time, here is a relevent thread on changing the desktop backround
using the Cocoa API:

i'm told GraphicConverter can do this, someone should probably contact the author.

Duping this against the Mac shell service bug (now fixed) that also implemented "Set Desktop Background".
