We are thinking about publishing Nightly on Google Play (Bug 1241114). Unfortunately org.mozilla.fennec is gone and we do not have any control over it (See bug 1289389 and bug 809700). In order to be able to publish Nightly we'd need to publish it with a different id (something like org.mozilla.nightly or org.mozilla.firefox_nightly). I guess we still want to build org.mozilla.fennec too - because that's what our users who update via our own updater are using. If usage of org.mozilla.fennec goes down then we can consider abandoning it, but this is something for later.

If we go with the release Nightly as a pre-release channel of Aurora do the package names need to match org.mozilla.fennec_aurora?

Yeah, we shouldn't do this for multiple technical reasons. Separate package ids and separate play store listings will make things much easier.

Aurora will become Nightly in bug 1354821.
