Details
From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows 98)
BuildID: 20020324
I have only Mozilla (no NS 4.x, but have IE 5.x) on my PC but today I decided
to installed Netscape 6.22, so I download the file, installed. I shutdown
mozilla so the NS will install. The NS start without any problem. (I choose not
to use NS6 as default browser)
Then I open Java plugin 1.4 control panel, enable 1.4 plug-in for NS6, then NS
6 start running and I can see Java applet running.
Then I shut down NS6 and try to restart mozilla, this time mozilla didn't
start, I just saw the border of the browser, and it just hang there.
Then I saw the netscape6 is not totally shutdown because when I press ctrl-alt-
del I could see netscape6 is not responding. But even I close it, restart my
pc, it's still not working. And even NS 6 is hangin afterward, too.
I tried uninstall, delete registory, nothing works, I can't use NS6 or mozilla
now.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Mozilla 0.99+, run it.
2. Download NS 6.22 installer, run it.
3. Installer complains Mozilla is running. shut it down.
4. Finish installing. Start NS 6.22, do not set as default. (no quickstart
either)
5. go to java.sun.com, applet needs plugin. CLOSE browser window.
6. go to control panel choose Java plug-in 1.4.x , enable plug-ins for NS6.
7. use NS6 to go to java.sun.com again. applet is running. CLOSE browser
window. (now it seems NS6 is not totally shutdown, cause the java console icon
is still on the windows taskbar.)
8. start mozilla, mozilla hangs. only shows window borders and gray background.
9. shutdown everything, start NS6, hangs too.
10. restart PC; try NS, mozilla, both hangs.
11. uninstall NS, try start mozilla; strangly, Mozilla ask me if I want to set
it as default browser (I didn't set NS as default when I installed it), set Yes-
-> mozilla hangs.
12. re-install mozilla --> still hangs.
Only solution --> re-image my HD.
Actual Results: Mozilla hangs, Netscape 6 hangs.
Expected Results: Mozilla running, Netscape 6 running

I just tried the same thing, except with Java 1.3, and everything worked fine.
I'm using Win 98SE and Mozilla build 2002031903.
I'd suggest it is something to do with Java 1.4.
I have solved my problem. I went to /window/application data/mozilla remove
everything in there and restart Netscape and it's running.
An interesting (odd) thing is the bookmark.html in the problemed directory has
been blown-up to 100+ MB!!! And when I look at the contents, the Mozilla part of
bookmark is fine, but the imported IE bookmark just repeating over and over again.
I just came back from JavaOne, and I ask Sun's Java Plug-in team, they said
Mozilla 0.99+ is not compatible with Java Plug-in 1.4.0 because Mozilla is
changing some registration process (?)
Be careful, don't install NS6.22, Mozilla 0.99+ and Java plugin 1.4.0.
So does this mean we could only use Java 1.3 on Mozilla 0.99+?

Quick launch is enabled, is not it?
I'm not sure. I know my Mozilla is using quick launch, but NS6 is not (because
I'm afraid there will be a conflict). However, NS6 shares the same
/windows/application data/Mozilla folder with Mozilla, I don't know how these
two programs share information/setting between each other.

I also noticed something similar. I had Netscape 6.2.1 already installed and
then I installed Mozilla 0.9.9 on the same system (as I wanted to test my
website on both). After installation, the first thing I noticed is that
neither browser could load CSS files, even though Netscape was doing this fine
before the install of Mozilla. So I uninstalled Mozilla.
Then, Netscape started experiencing the "hang" described herein, even
though "Quick Launch" was enabled. I also discovered the huge bookmark file
described herein. After deleting the /application data/Mozilla folder and
reinstalling Netscape, Netscape worked normally again.

see bug 127856 for the 'huge bookmark' problem-
confirming-
think there is a duplicate out there also

I experienced a similar hang with Mozilla 0.99, 1.0, & 1.1B and Netscape 6.2.
Today I saw the comment about removing \Windows\Application Data\mozilla, so I
tried it (after installing 1.1b) and now Mozilla 1.1b works starts fine.
BTW some extra data points. I'm using Windows 98SE. Looking at a network
monitor, I could see that the client connected to the Mozilla.org web server and
downloaded the start page before hanging. Also looking at the program wintop,
the mozilla client had 7 threads created and was consuming 90+% of the CPU
cycles.
I haven't yet tried reinstalling Netscape 6.2.
