There is a way to add new quoted text, although perhaps it could be easier to do: Edit -> Paste as quotation Does this satisfy your needs, reporter?

Yes, but it is complicated and difficult to find. It would be nice if it would be possible to do this an easier way. (Dependency with bug 133741 because it would be useless if you can't see it.) -> Make existing text a quote by pressing <Back> at the beginning of a line only if the text starts with a quote sign, of course

Pretty weird and obscure. Backspace should just delete whatever is before the caret, be it a space, ">" or a newline. I.e. suggest another keycombo or this should be WONTFIX.
