+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #1308776 +++

Wrt this dropdown (AB picker):

Options > Compose > Addressing > "Default startup directory in the address book window"

This bug suggests the following improvements (along Jörg's Bug 1308776 Comment 114):

1) Add a separator after "Last used directory" (because that option is fundamentally different in behaviour from all the other options; as seen in screenshot)
2) Add an icon to "Last used directory" (I suggest a punch pin, as seen in screenshot)
3) Not required for this bug: Find a better icon to represent "All address books", both in main AB window and in AB selectors

Note that the screenshot is photomontage.
Summary: Address book window: Implement prefs and UI to set any address book, mailing list, or "All Address Books" as default startup view, or remember last-used (mail.addr_book.view.startupURI, mail.addr_book.view.startupURIisDefault) → Polish "Default startup directory in the address book window" dropdown in options (AB picker)

Screenshot 1: AB picker mockup including separator and icon for "Last used directory"

F+ for the separator. But the pin as icon for "last used" is in my eyes not so optimal. The pin is more like always use the same, pinned directory.

I know it's hard to find a good icon. I thought already on the original bug about it.

For All Addressbooks we could use a icon with stacked addressbooks but this is not so easy to do on 16px * 16px.

Thanks. I agree it's not easy to find a good icon for "(Remember) Last used directory". Notwithstanding other ideas, I think the pin icon which I suggested in attachment 8842537 [details] conveys the idea quite well:

Pin icon is often used to "nail down" (remember) something which is normally volatile. E.g., TB's message list quick filters are normally volatile, but you can use the pin to remember them (make them semi-permanent). Similarly, in MS Word you can use the pin on files in your MRU list to remember them (again arguably in a semi-permanent way because you're free to remove the pin at any time).

So by analogy, here we'll be using the pin to nail down (remember) something which is normally volatile (the last used directory), and make that semi-permanent (for your next AB start). Even using Richard's description, I think this works out quite well: "The pin is more like always use the same, pinned directory". Well, last used directory is changing by definition, but otherwise this correctly translates to: "Always use the pinned directory" --> "Always use the 'last used directory'".

So in short:
  Pin + "Last used directory"
= Remember last used directory (which is normally volatile, but now made semi-permanent)
What version of Thunderbird will this be available in?

Thanks, JP
None yet, there is no fix available yet.

Thomas, please review severity and keyword, and either remove "regression" (and keep enhancement) or change severity to not be "enhancement". Thanks

Not a regression, thanks. Obviously debris from cloning the bug.
