Just had nightly inform me of an update clicked the download button While this was happening daily informed me that update was available Waited until I thought nightly update had down loaded closed nightly Started nightly it did not load Clicked the update button on daily then the restart button daily did not load Started task manager neither nightly or daily apps loaded Checked background processes Found a daily and a daily update process Ended daily process and daily immediately loaded Found 4 nightly process ended the 4 then clicked to start nightly it loaded correctly Checked help about nightly found there was an update 19 June available Clicked to download then clicked to restart it did not load Checked task manager found 5 background process Ended 2 and nightly immediately loaded Checked task manager nightly and daily had apps loaded Nightly had 6 background process and daily had none Checked update status both up to date Both programs working OK

Thunderbird hasn't made the change that Firefox has (a Thunderbird dev has been informed) so lets keep this to being about Firefox. Firefox has a 63 second timeout before it kills itself when exiting so an update can be applied. During the next update please wait a couple of minutes and hopefully that will provide more details to go on. Thanks!

Have just checked task manager again Did the above steps at approx 0300 and it is now 0620 WST Australia and nightly has 10 background process will wait as requested next update

The number of processes when running Firefox has nothing to do with updating. This is how Firefox works now that it has support for multiple processes. That info *might* be of value when it doesn't startup correctly but this info definitely doesn't provide anything of value when running normally.

Received message yesterday evening nightly download update downloaded it Shutdown machine several hours later Started machine this morning tried to start nightly it did not start Checked background processes 1 nightly and 1 update nightly running Ended nightly and the update nightly ended with it Nightly started normally While working received message to update nightly downloaded the update Worked for about 10 minutes then closed nightly Waited 3 minutes then tried to start nightly did not start Found 3 nightly processes but none using any resources Waited about 2 minutes no resources used then ended tasks nightly started normally Worked typing this then closed nightly Watched 3 nightly processes shut down Waited about 2 minutes started nightly watch 3 processes start quickly then nightly completed loading normally

Thanks for the info. I highly suspect that this is similar to bug 1374364 which I filed bug 1375242 for. Based on Firefox not starting on Wednesday June 21 without updating "Checked about nightly Nightly up todate" this appears to also affect regular startup at times as well? Can you confirm this is the case? It was doing that and had to reboot the machine since then found that by ending the processes did not have to do that I will have to check this as now leave it open all the time Just checked closed nightly it left 6 processes open waited 2 minutes opened nightly it started normally I think that it only occurs when I try and update and have not ended the open processes from the update

It usually happens when updating but it did happen without updating for this case correct? This will help with identifying the underlying cause. Actually, the fact that you "Closed nightly waited 3 minutes 4 background nightly processes open 0% CPU" confirms that this is an issue with firefox.exe exiting with or without an update. Thanks!

I've changed the updater in Bug 1375549 so it will apply the update anyways so if there is a fix for the Firefox (other applications as well) process not exiting the client will get the fix and to not try to launch Firefox (other applications as well) when the process hasn't exited. This should merge into Nightly in a couple of days. The issue with Firefox (other applications as well) will need to be fixed in Bug 1375242 so I am duplicating this bug to that bug. The developers working on bug 1375242 need additional information per bug 1375242 comment #2 so if you can help provide that information it would be helpful. Thanks!
