User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64; rv:54.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/54.0
Build ID: 20170608105825
Steps to reproduce:
System:
Windows 10 Home x64 Edition
Kaspersky Internet Security 2017
The following problem also happend with Thunderbird.
If Firefox/Thunderbird gets an update for a newer version i get my popup and can start the Update like usual, but the update can't be completed.
When the Update comes to the nessessary restart of the software, it closes all windows but doesnt restart the programm.
Firefox/Thunderbird stay active in task manager, the update wasn't able to kill this task. If I try to start the programm over shortcut, it creates a new task without opening a window.
When I kill the task myself with the task manager, Firefox/Thunderbird stays on last version and trys to update again.
Actual results:
Update doesn't perform the nessessary restart, program stays active in task manager.
Expected results:
Programm should have been closed completely in task manager and restart again.

Do i have to create another bug report for Thunderbird? Because I had the same issue there too.

You shouldn't need to. It is almost certainly the same underlying issue.
I've changed the updater in Bug 1375549 so it will apply the update anyways so if there is a fix for the Firefox (other applications as well) process not exiting the client will get the fix and to not try to launch Firefox (other applications as well) when the process hasn't exited. This should merge into Nightly in a couple of days.
The issue with Firefox (other applications as well) will need to be fixed in Bug 1375242 (this is likely a duplicate of bug 1375242). The developers working on bug 1375242 need additional information per bug 1375242 comment #2 so if you can help provide that information it would be helpful. Thanks!

I managed to reproduce (with some differences regarding the actual results given by the reporter) the issue described in comment 0.
I updated Firefox Nightly from 2017-06-08 and I encountered the following behavior:
Same results with reporter:
Firefox stays active in task manager (the update wasn't able to kill the tasks).
Trying to start Firefox with the same profile isn't possible (The profile is open inside the opened task).
Different results:
The update is successfully completed ,but after updating, Firefox successfully restarts but becomes unusable.
When killing the task, Firefox stays on the last version and doesn't try to update again.
Note:
This issue is not reproducible updating Firefox Nightly from 2017-07-15 to the current version.
