What operating system are you using? And just making sure, a refresh of the page fixes itself? Are there any error console messages? Perhaps an exception relating to sendAsyncMessage?

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; Win64; x64; rv:56.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/56.0
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.12; rv:56.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/56.0
Build ID: 20170718030207
I can reproduce the issue with the blank about:newtab.
In about:config, browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.enabled is true and from about:preferences I've set the "about:newtab" as homepage. The pref "When Nightly starts" has the value "Show your home page". At this point the browser can be closed and start it again. After the browser starts the displayed newtab page is blank, Search and Top Sites are missing. I didn't see any errors in the console :(
For me, if the page is refreshed or a new New Tab is opened the Search and Top Sites are displayed.

Hello, I can also confirm this bug. It is reproducible with completely new or existing account.
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.12; rv:56.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/56.0
E10s: enabled ; dom.ipc.processCount: 4 ; browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.enabled: true
I attached my screenshot as proof.
If I click on button "home", new tab page is loaded correctly.
If I open another tabs or close all tabs and open new window, new tab page is loaded correctly too. This problem appears for me only at "Quit of Firefox" and consequential fresh start up.
Hopefully you can find attached console's output useful. I put here also text version of output:

[Tracking Requested - why for this release]: Poor experience on restart when restoring about:newtab or other ways of opening about:newtab early.
We'll want to fix this for 56. Although also activity stream will only be preffed on in Nightly 56 and not Beta 56.

I managed to reproduce the initial issue using 56.0a1 (2017-07-20). I can confirm that 57.0b6 build1 (20171005195903) is fixed, using Windows 10 x64, Ubuntu 16.04 x64 and Mac OS X 10.11.6.
The 56.0.1 build2 (20171002220106) build is only fixed on Windows and Ubuntu platforms, the Mac platform is still affected (also confirmed this on macOS 10.12.6). Any thoughts about this?

For a user on 56 to run into this, the Activity Stream would need to be turned on (via about:config) and about:newtab set as the home page. Although from my testing on 56 mac, I don't run into the "undefined" title problem, but it's probably actually bug 1386445, which was fixed for 57 and not uplifted to 56.

I verified this fix on 56 build, too, because it was set on affected and then fixed.
Yes, indeed, the AS isn't turned on by default on 56, but I followed the steps from comment 3, where the issue was also reproduced (set the browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.enabled to true and the about:newtab set as the home page). Also it is weird that the issue is still reproducible on mac platform only.
