On macOS, it is sometimes easy to accidentally ⌘-Q and close Firefox when you really meant to ⌘-W to close the tab. In Chrome, re-launching the app automatically restores the previously-opened tabs. In Firefox, its still possible to "Restore Previous Session" from the History menu, but it would be really helpful and a better UX if this behavior was automatic. Note, I'm not sure if this is relevant on other OSes because I'm not sure if there's a similar ⌘-Q keystroke to kill all windows on Windows or Linux. So, this may only apply to macOS.

You don't need to restore the previous session. You can make Firefox open windows/tabs from the previous session in preferences (General --> When Nightly starts).

Sorry, I should've been clearer. Having recently switched to Nightly with a fresh profile, I noticed that this is not the *default* behavior. I think we should maybe consider making it the default (at least on macOS). If it's possible to easily mistakenly close Firefox on other platforms too, then I'd also argue that it should be changed as a default behavior on those platforms as well.

I'm quite sure there's a duplicate bug for this, but I can't find it at the moment. The intention is to have this flipped on by default on OSX soon - possibly even in Fx 57 - after bug 1034036 lands. This is the final missing piece to getting session restore behave in such a way that it's good to have as default behavior.

I just downloaded a fresh copy and opened it in a brand new profile. As of version 61.0.2 "Session restore" is still off by default on macOS.

The last needinfo from me was triggered in error by recent activity on the bug. I'm clearing the needinfo since this is a very old bug and I don't know if it's still relevant.
