User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:57.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/57.0
Build ID: 20170916135216
Steps to reproduce:
Open up Firefox Nightly (currently on 57.0a1 2017-09-16).
Actual results:
The address bar and Android status bar are white, contrasting poorly with other aspects of the UI.
Expected results:
The address bar and Android status bar should be darker.
While I imagine some of this comes down to personal preference, currently the stark white background is not only too bright, but causes flickering and contrasts poorly with other aspects of the UI, namely switching tabs, going into private browsing mode, and entering reader mode.
Switching tabs makes everything (including the Android status bar) a dark gray (shouldn't that just be the default at all times?).
Going into private browsing does the same. That uses the same color as when switching tabs, which further shows how the constant dark background has no jarring visual changes.
Reader mode can have a dark background, but when that is selected the bright white address bad and Android status bar are still visible.

The white theme works very well on my Fairphone with Android 6 (Res: 1080 × 1920; 446 ppi; in case that matters for the devs).
What device and Android version are you experiencing these issues on?

FWIW, all that is not the case on my handset

I know I repeat myself, but the white theme works well on my handset, so I wouldn't see why that should be the case.

No jarring visual changes for me switching tabs or standard/private tabbing.
My answers are not meant to proof you wrong, but to point out that maybe there only needs some optimisation been done on the white theme's rendering for your handset/tablet(?), instead of the whole theme to be changed!?

While I guess "white address _bad_" was just a Freudian slip, Bug 1388895 seems to have a point ;)

I'm a bit confused: the address bar and Android status bar don't go from being pure white to very dark gray every time you hit the tab button and then back again? Maybe there's some bug in my version (I'm using a Nexus 5 running Android 6.0.1); I don't have another phone to test it on. I'll attach screenshots to make this clearer.
I don't especially like the bright white, but regardless the UI should be consistent and not change. There's simply no reason why the tab switcher (and address bar and Android status bar) should be a different color than the address bar and status bar when browsing a site. Compare this to Firefox 55, which uses the same colors consistently so there is always a smooth transition.

Sorry, the "pure white" I mentioned is actually very light gray.
Note also that changing the status bar from near-white to near-black causes the status icons to become the inverse color and go back and forth as well.

Fair enough, maybe I should have made it more clear. I like the effect, the transition of the UI and the colors is very smooth on my handset and can't find anything _jarring_ about the visual change. So maybe it does come down to personal preference here, if the effect is not shaky or jittery for you (which would be a bug) and this is more about a possible enhancement request for UI/UX to think about. Maybe like a second theme, with different colors for default/tab switching/incognito.

Again, I think this comes down to personal preference.

The transition of the UI & the colors with the new theme is very smooth on my handset.

This is by design, please check: Bug 1376995 and Bug 1399384 for more infos.
I'll mark this as an enhancement. If you see any other issues with this implementation, please let us know.
Thank you!
