Details
It seems (with mozilla 1.0 rc1) that long subjects in news articles destroy
the sender column display. Every article with a long subject has the last bytes
of the subject followed by "?=" as sender. The sender is shown correctly in the
preview pane and in the separate window, it is only garbled in the newsgroup
overview.

Yes it does. Check bug 138222, which was duped against bug 131983. The
screenshots in attachments to 138222 show "?22" or "?ISO" at the beginning of
the sender column.
