these crashes (mainly 64bit builds on windows 7) seem to be regressing in 57 and take place in an advanced layers codebase.

:dvander, Could you help take a look at this? It seems to be affected by our advanced layers changes.
Besides, it only happens in Release and Beta, and no crash report from Nightly. It seems that we can uplift some patches to fix this 57 regression.
