If you open firefox using a private window only, then close that window once finished, the previous sessions tabs will have been wiped when you next open firefox normally.

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:58.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/58.0
Build ID: 20180128191252

Steps to reproduce:

I have used current Firefox 58 with addons disabled and enabled. I also tested with a new profile with nothing changed.

With Firefox closed, I open a new private window (right click on Firefox taskbar shortcut and click "New private window" in my case)

After browsing as normal, I close the private window.

I then open Firefox as normal to continue my previous session.

Actual results:

When Firefox opens "Restore Previous Session" is unavailable, closing the private window seems to have wiped it.

Expected results:

I expected the previous session to have not been touched, just because a private window was closed (I used to do this in older versions of Firefox regularly and it worked without issue).

I don't know if this behaviour is normal now or not, but it doesn't seem like something it should do.

Well, restoring private windows is not something we do, as in private tabs are not restored on restart.

If you expected that the windows from the regular browsing session _before_ you opened a single private window session to be restored, we're definitely in feature request territory, because that's not explicitly supported. It's not a common scenario, though, because you're the first to bring it up, but it's interesting nonetheless.

Will this not also happen if another application launches a url in the default browser while Firefox is closed (as long as Firefox is the default browser)? Michael, have you tested this? I'm still on old Firefox on my main computer so I can't test this at the moment.

swleefers, yes: if you launch a url while firefox is closed, all the previous tabs and sessions are gone. For example, if I receive an e-mail that includes a link to a package tracking website such as UPS, FEDEX or USPS and open it BEFORE I've already started firefox and restored all my other tabs, firefox forgets all the old, desired tabs. The only way to get any back is by displaying the full history, poring through it, then clicking each of them in turn. I'd much prefer an option to select a bunch of "Restore sessions" to restore. This is really annoying. Also, I've closed firefox normally (by clicking the upper-righthand "close" button) and when I reopened it, found all the old tabs gone. While this hasn't happened lately, when it does, it makes me want to throw my laptop through the window. Also-also, I can remember that not all that long ago, when I reopened firefox, it would automagically restore my tabs; but no mo :( One has to go "restore previous session" since "restore closed tabs" is greyed-out and hope "restore previous session" is not greyed-out by some glitch.
