User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:61.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/61.0 Build ID: 20180703115938 Steps to reproduce: I download a file in private mode. Then I change to another tab or close the tab. Actual results: The downloads icon dissapears. When I check the download list, the download is gone, as if I never downloaded anything in the first place (that is, it doesn't appear as cancelled or failed). Expected results: Download continues.
Actually, the problem I had wasn't that I couldn't open the downloaded file, it was that the download was cancelled and dissapeared. I have attached a screencast reproducing it.
Screencast showing bug
Confirmed, thanks for the screencast. For those looking into the bug, it happens on the Release version and it may be worth finding out if this has been regressed by a code change. I'm wondering if we're sending too soon a notification for the last private browsing window closing.
Component: Downloads Panel → Private Browsing
Summary: Downloads cannot be opened in a new Private mode tab → Downloads are cancelled when closing a private browsing tab and only "about:downloads" remains
Hi, I tried to find a regression range for this issue, but i was unable to reproduce this issue at all, I tried a number of Nightly builds all the way back to 2018-01-01 as well as all 3 release versions 60, 60.1 (build id: 20180704192850) and 60.2. I tested this on Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS 64-bit and I was unable to reproduce it. Here are the steps I followed: 1.Open the Firefox Browser and open a new private window. 2.Reach https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop and click the download button. 3.Add a new empty tab. 4.Click Show all downloads which opens in a new tab. 5.Close all other tabs except the about:downloads tab. Following these steps I couldn't reproduce this issue. Are there any special settings ? or maybe a few extra addons I should install in order to reproduce this issue ?

This still happens for me also on Windows, both on Nightly and Release, by following the steps in comment 5.

Component: Private Browsing → Downloads API

Product: Firefox → Toolkit

I cannot reproduce, similarly to comment 5, thus there must be something unclear about the steps to reproduce.
Setting as a P5 but this is quite incomplete if we don't figure out proper STR.

I believe this bug occurs when the new-tab page is overridden by an extension (with the "chrome_url_overrides" -> "newtab" manifest property) and possibly when "browser.newtabpage.enabled" is set to "false".

For me, the bug occurs when I have the extension "New Tab Tools" installed, even when "Run in Private Windows" is set to "Don't Allow". To fix the issue, I have to fully disable the extension and start a new private browsing session.

Probably related to this bug: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1188732
