What it does is... marks junk as read. All junk, both what thunderbird marks as junk and what the email provider moves into the junk folder. It's a simple and easy task and I really can't believe that thunderbird doesn't have an option for it. Again, I mean ALL junk. I know thunderbird has an option to mark junk as read but it doesn't apply to all junk. Unfortunately with the latest update this addon (as well as most, even some of your featured ones) doesn't work any more. I believe this should be a part of thunderbird and I'm sure that a lot of users will agree with me now that this addon can't be used any more. Actual results: see above Expected results: see above
Junk mail occasionally needs to be checked for false positives so I believe by default it should not be marked as read. I don't think this should be a part of Thunderbird.
Maybe you didn't understand my comment. This is ALREADY a part of thunderbird. It just doesn't work properly. The user who selects "mark spam as read" expects ALL spam to be marked as read. This isn't working currently. If you don't like this option don't use it but it should work properly for those of us that do.

Not sure what information you're looking for. I have an IMAP account which has a spam folder. I have the "mark spam as read" option checked. However not all spam that goes into that folder is actually marked as read. Most are but not all. Maybe it's the spam that is sent there by my provider and not thunderbird that doesn't get marked. But that's just an assumption.

I simply want anything that ends up in that folder for whatever reason to be marked as read, which is exactly what the extension that I described in my original message did.

Right - the option "Mark messages determined to be Junk as read" is only for messages that Thunderbird* determines to be Junk.

Your issue is more along the lines of bug 1273818

Yes, it' similar to that. I assume the "Messages in the Junk folder that don't have Junk flag should be automatically marked as/treated as spam (for example from server side filtering)" has not been implemented yet. If this is implemented, does it mean that the "Mark messages determined to be Junk as read" option will then mark server-spam as read as well ?

Depends on how it is implemented. Let's assume so, but make it a blocker in case it doesn't pan out.
