Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:61.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/61.0
Build ID: 20180704194802
Steps to reproduce:
As I understand it, the fixing of bug #237027 ( https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=237027 ) has enabled ctrl-shift-enter to open a link in the address bar in a background tab without changing to that tab, once browser.urlbar.ctrlCanonizesURLs has been appropriately set.
This is not the case from the search bar, though, and :Gijs suggested a new bug be filed to consider making the search bar consistent with this behavior. Says he: "Could you file a separate issue, and we can work out if it's fixable there? IIRC there are some other subtleties with how search behaves (e.g. defaults for whether tabs open in the foreground or not when you use the page context menu to search are governed by a different pref to the one governing "normal" links opened in tabs)." [ https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=237027#c129 ]
Expected results:
I maintained the Background Tabs extension for years, and a small but devoted user base would greatly appreciate the ability to easily open tabs in the background using the keyboard. (Alt-enter and then switching back is not convenient.)

This is more or less the same idea as bug 765619, just with a different way of activation. It is probably also mixed up in bug 1536756 which that bugs depends on - the general idea there being to make this all consistent.
Therefore I'm going to dupe to bug 765619.
