From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.0.0) Gecko/20020530
BuildID: 20020530 (Mozilla 1.0)
I decided to use a HOSTS file on Windows to stop ads
from being downloaded from the internet.
I downloaded a hosts file containing all the commons ad servers being
redirected to either 0.0.0.0 or 127.0.0.1 from http://www.smartin-designs.com/
After I've done so , I got pop-up messages (oh god no)in Mozilla
saying "The connection was refused when attempting to contact
"whatever.adserver.something" when I visit a site containing ads from server
being blocked in the hosts file. I got this message on some sites (but not every
site) that contains blocked servers ads.
I have to click OK on each of these windows to continue browsing.
That behavior is nowhere to be seen on Internet Explorer where the hosts file
works and dont't gice connection errors.
I use a direct connection to the internet (no proxy)
I don't know if this used to work on Mozilla before (regression) ,it's the first
time that I set up a Hosts file to block ads.
I know I could use image blocker from within Mozilla (like I did before)
but my goal was to stop ads from being downloaded and as I see it, all Mozilla
is doing is hide the images after downloading them and do not actually block them.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Download the hosts file from http://www.smartin-designs.com/
2.Install it in your Windows dir (different for 95/98/ME, NT/2000 and XP)
3.Fire Mozilla and visit http://www.ign.com/
Actual Results: I have a pop-up message from Mozilla
saying "The connection was refused when attempting to contact
adserver.ign.com" I have to click ok to get rid of the
pop-up window and the ads from this server are blocked.
Expected Results: The ads are blocked and I'm not getting a pop-up error message.
