After Glean integrates with Fenix, should we also migrate other existing applications that are using telemetry-android to glean? This bug is about making a call on that, verifying any potential impact on the collected data, and enumerating the applications that might require migration.

That's a Q2-2019 conversation.
Priority: -- → P3

Component: Telemetry → Glean: SDK
Product: Toolkit → Data Platform and Tools

Let's start by listing out apps that need to be ported over.

Whiteboard: [telemetry:glean-rs:m?] → [telemetry:glean-rs:m10]

The applications to be ported over are:

  • Firefox Reality
  • Firefox Lite
  • Focus
  • FirefoxTV
  • Lockwise for Android
Whiteboard: [telemetry:glean-rs:m10] → [telemetry:glean-rs:backlog]

In light of changing priorities since we last looked at this, the updated list of applications and their migration status seems to be:

  • Firefox Reality - in progress
  • Firefox Lite - sort of in progress?
  • Focus - This app seems to be in maintenance mode and EoL, do we drop it from the list?
  • FFTV - Since development of this app has stopped, I think we can remove it from the list.
  • Lockwise - Since this app's future is uncertain, do we also want to remove it from the list?

My next question is, do we even still need this bug to track this? The two apps who seem to have a future seem to be aware of migrating to Glean, and it seems to be on their teams to do the integration.

I think it still makes sense to keep this open. I agree Focus can be removed from the list given it's EOL. FFTV is not EOL nor is Lockwise, so I think we should keep them in here.

I'd be favor of breaking this bug out into bugs for individual products, then closing this one. Given the way products go in and out of livelihood we may never close this otherwise ;)

What about closing this, as Travis suggested in comment 4? 5 months have passed and lots of things changed. Firefox Reality is done and Firefox Lite doesn't seem to have a concrete plan to move forward.

FWIW, I believe we might as well just remove service-telemetry from A-C.

+1 on just closing this.

Aren't there still some users of service-telemetry? Removing it would mean they couldn't upgrade to a newer a-c for any reason, which might not be desired.

Yes, it means that they won't be able to upgrade to A-C unless they switch to Glean. We gave plenty of time for migration, we could try to communicate this again as an "PSA: Intent to remove"?
