Details
(Whiteboard: [PL2:P3][acrobat][Plug-in Mgr][WORKAROUND: Comment out the Acrobat scan in your winpref.js])
I've been using Mozilla pre-1.0 versions for a long time, and just upgraded to
released 1.0. Adobe Acrobat Reader had been working fine as a separate program,
so I could keep mulitple big PDFs open while browsing elsewhere, or even after
closing the browser. This was fine through several upgrades. The 1.0 install,
however, turned Acroread into an in-the-window plug-in. The "display PDF in
browser" button is not checked in Acroread.
I would like to change it back, and I believe that Mozilla 1.0's updater had a
bug that caused this problem. (I used the "custom" options, un-clicking
Chatzilla and talkback.)

[future]plugin manager might solve this . For now, u can remove the nppdf32.dll
manually form the plugins folder and this should work just fine, the helper app
should take over and launch acrobat seperately. But before u do this, try adding
pdf in helper app settings under prefs and see if that works, if it does not,
file a bug against prefs (helper apps), Thx!
per shrirang marking as future.
BUT, for the record, I'm using acrobat reader 5.0 right now. I tried to
reproduce this bug with what I would imagine the steps are based on the report
filed, but I can't.
Reporter - can you post your exact steps?
1. did you have acrobat reader installed *ANY* versions of mozilla?
2. what version of the reader?
3. did this only break with mozilla 1.0?(did it work with previous versions)
Thank you,
ADavis
marking bug as INVALID until we get a reproducible testcase.

reopening based on what peter mentioned:
---cut/paste Peterl's comment------
This might be valid. Acrobat has an option to disable loading the PDF inline (so
that it always is displayed as a helper application) but I think this is broken
due to the fact we
"sweep" for it now. There should be a way to turn it off in the Acrobat
preferences and you'll notice it still work with Mozilla but not with 4.x. To
make it stop working with
Mozilla, you need to comment out the Acrobat scan pref in winpref.js
---end---
reporter, pls try to change the pref

There is an option in the Adobe Acorbat Reader that determines this:
1. Open Acrobat Reader
2. Select Edit|Preferences
3. Select Options on the prefs panel
4. Ensure the checkbox for Display PDF in Browser is unchecked and try again

Okay, I found the problem... thanks to shirang! I commented out the acrobat
scan in winprefs.js, exited all Mozillas (didn't work until then), and
restarted. I presume that this scan is new to 1.0? It strikes me as a
misfeature if not a bug -- it should be optional. The winprefs.js file is
downright obscure.
The display-in-browser box was unchecked; it was overriden by the scan.

not me..thanks to 'Peter'(works in background) :)
what to do with this? Beth? Will we be removing the scan prefs soon or plugin
manager is going to be more flexible in such a case(if it is going to handle
this)?
