Press send 4. two windows come up : one with the progress indicator a pop-up dialog, stating "Sending of message failed". 5. click on the OK button in the pop-up 6. focus comes back to another browser window, rather than to the message compose window This makes the "required" setting extremely hard to use, because not only do you have to uncheck the encryption on the email, you also have to hunt the message window

There are actually several of these all over the client application. Another one, which is not related to s/mime per se, but essentially the same behavior, is to set the smtp server to a non-existent server. After the message sending failure message is returned to the user and the user dismisses the dialog, focus returns to the main mail window instead of the composition window. It would be interesting to know if all of these lost parent window relationships are caused by the same thing...

I hope these problems get fixed for Mozilla 1.01 / Netscape 7.0 RTM. This is a rather serious usability issue for S/MIME and for mail in general.

I don't see this problem anymore in Seamonkey 1.1.8 .

seems likely to me that this is related to Bug 375468 – Previous window does not activate (get its focus back) after closing and saving a message from Compose ... whose workaround is mailnews.show_send_progress=false

We still have a problem here. Just tried with TB 3.1 on Linux. What I see is: - the progress dialog "sending message" comes up - the information dialog "can not find encryption cert" comes up and is SHOWN BEHIND the progress dialog :/ In order to continue, the user must click on the dialog that's behind (bringing it to the front), then confirm it (ok=close), then the progress dialog closes.
