User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/74.0.3729.169 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce:

Open firefox with a logged in account using master password. Don't fill in the "pasword required" dialog box. Then watch a fullscreen video (netflix in my case) and wait.

reproduced on firefox 67.0.1 on windows 64bit

Actual results:

At some random time during the video the pop-up "password required" appears in the middle of the screen, blocking the video.

Expected results:

No pop up in the middle of video playback.

Hi, Thanks for taking the time to report this issue but we might need a few more steps in order to reproduce this issue.

First things first, I've set up a Master Password and then I have Logged in to Netflix with an account and Clicked the "Save" button at the prompt which saved my account.

If I just restart the browser and reach netflix again, its already logged in but no prompts are displayed, there is no password required dialog box.
If I sign out and restart the browser, when I reach Netflix I am asked for the Master Password which if I don't enter I'm unable to log in.
If I do sign out and restart the browser, when I reach Netflix I am asked for the Master Password which I just Close the prompt and log in with the same saved account from before, which makes the Master Password prompt to be displayed a few times after youre already logged in.

Is this the same behavior you're experiencing ?

Can you please tell me the exact steps ? because after i closed the Master password prompt a few times it was not displayed during any videos playing.

I very rarely sign out of netflix so my use case is probably: Start firefox, go to netflix.com (i'm already logged in), start playing video. Then after a while (not right away), the "password required" dialog shows up over the full screen video.

  • In the above scenario, I can't remember if I need to dismiss the dialog (pressing cancel) first right after the browser launches. I've developed quite the habit to click cancel so I'm not sure. I will clarify this point when I get back on the computer I can test on.

  • You might want to try saving up at least two accounts into the (master password protected) password manager for testing. I have dozens, and maybe the dialog show up less if the only account it holds is already logged in.

  • I'm not sure how password manager and firefox sync are related, but I'm using firefox sync also. Maybe it's the prompt for sync? There's no way to know since the dialog doesn't say.

I will get back to you with more details step-by-step how to reproduce when I get back on my home computer. Thanks!

I managed to reproduce this issue in every version of Firefox from Release to our latest Nightly build. After saving a few passwords and navigating on Pinterest, watching Netflix and scrolling Facebook the Master Password prompt would be displayed out of nowhere. I used the same profile to reproduce the issue on Beta and Nightly. After clicking Cancel on the Master Password prompt it shouldnt be displayed again since the user is already logged in on those websites.

I am not aware of any changes that would make this worse than it's always been. As-is, Master Password's prompt has no context, and appears whenever the MP is first needed: often upon the first Sync kicking off.

...is there reason to think it's suddenly worse?

https://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/rev/023dd959512e2cfa685187616560f91efa91183c might have made it worse, but that was removed in later updates.

Did you have sync set up for this profile?

Hi Dana, I was not synced in to Firefox when I was testing this issue, the trick to reproducing it was to save a few passwords and then when you reach netflix and the prompt for the master password is displayed you have to close the prompt from the X button and then log in normally with the same account that was previously saved. It takes a while before the prompt is displayed again, I'll try to reproduce this issue again with and without sync later on this week and I will let you know the results.
