Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.10; rv:68.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/68.0
Steps to reproduce:
Unknown, have not touched the settings in question for at least a year on my Mac OS system, where the bug happened. Bug is not present in other versions.
Actual results:
I tried to search for something and the results came from one of my user-added search engines instead of google. Checking my settings revealed that there were no default search engines. "Restore Default Search Engines" cannot be clicked.
Expected results:
Search results should have come from google, search settings should not have been altered from a google default. "Restore Default Search Engines" should be clickable.

Please can you confirm the version of Firefox you are using and the locale? Also, which region are you located in?
If you restart Firefox, then go to the three-bar menu -> Web Developer -> Browser Console, are there any messages listed that relate to search or the search service?

This happened to me in one of the versions of Firefox Nightly 70.0a1 (de_DE locale, located in Germany) prior to build 20190716112534 (2019-07-16) (64-Bit). I can’t find anything in the browser console that seems to relate to search engines.
Currently my search engines contain this default list with no shortcuts set:
- Bing
- Amazon.de
- DuckDuckGo
- eBay
- Ecosia
- LEO Eng-Deu
- Wikipedia (de)

But I’m not sure if that’s relevant; I have clicked “Restore Default Search Engines” prior to restarting and checking for an error message.

Your situation is probably bug 1565836 which was a temporary issue in nightly and has since been fixed by reverting the change that broke it.

Yes, that’s it. After I restored a backed up search.json.mozlz4
, it worked fine.
Hi I'm still seeing this in 68, how do I switch back to Google as my default search provider without that option in the dropdown?
Hi Mark, I'm still seeing this issue in FF68, anything that can be done?

Hi Alex,
Please can you do a couple of things for us:
- Enter
about:config
in the address bar. - Acknowledge the warning if there is one.
- Within that page, search for
browser.search.region
and see what the value is. - Then search for
intl.accept_languages
and see what the value is. - Please also see if
distribution.id
exists, and if so, what is its value? - Also go to Help -> About, and confirm the version of Firefox you're on.
- Try going into
Preferences
->Search
and then underOne-click search engines
selectRestore Default Search Engines
and see if that helps.
Please report the values back here, as well as your operating system version, and if anything has helped.

Unfortunately without further information there's nothing we can do here. If you problem still persists, please re-open or file a new bug, including the information in my previous comment.

I let Firefox update itself today from from 71.0b1 to from 71.0b5. Google used to be my default search engine. But after updating & restarting Firefox, the preferences page has no search engines at all. The drop-down menu for "Default Search Engine" in empty, and the "Restore Default Search Engines" button is disabled, so I don't even have a way to reset.
Debug info:
- Firefox version 71.0b1 (developer edition)
- Mac 10.11.5 (15F34)
browser.search.region
= "US"intl.accept_languages
= "en-US, en"distribution.id
= "Boolean" radio button selected- cannot click "restore default" button because it's disabled(!)

Hi arthaey, I've split this out to bug 1593284.
