Markus' tests show that extra full-screen Layers cost us considerably in terms of power usage (and heat), and when using a retina display, the visual improvement of subpixel-AA text is minimal.
We should try disabling component alpha Layers for that configuration since doing so reduces power usage on [1] by ~15W.

I think in the 15W I double-counted the GPU watts. I'll get better measurements soon.

Markus, is this still relevant? I am checking for unassigned blockers to macOS power meta Bug 1404042 and this is one of them.
