- toggle the grids in order
div.grid,div.grid__item-2.subgrid,div.subgrid__item-1.subgrid - uncheck the middle grid
ER: the highlighter for the middle grid should be present and translucent
AR: the highlighter for the middle grid is missing

The order of clicks is important. If you click in reverse-depth: div.subgrid__item-1.subgrid, div.grid__item-2.subgrid, div.grid and then click on the middle one, the highlighter shows as as expected.
