My first theory is to see if we can link this statically so that people on old
Linux versions (eg Red Hat 6.x) will just work. Whether that's really a
reasonable thing to do still remains to be seen.

After reading through various things in the gcc mailing list archives, we chose
to do nothing special for libgcc, so it's linked dynamically. The standard
builds have new enough glibc dependencies that they wouldn't have worked on 6.x
anyway, which has since been End-Of-Lifed by Red Hat.
