What happens with Windows started in safemode?
Took me a while reported "failed to connect to server "IMAP gmail.com"
but it did download new messages, and Firefox has no problems.

Thunderbird runs OK on the Mac side?
Does problem change if you unusubscribe from the Gmail All Mail folder?

Problem seemed to be with a continuous need to download 150+ messages on startup in the "all mail folder" despite not having that much new gmail activity.
I was afraid to delete the "all mail" folder as it has information I need to retain.
I deleted the gmail account in TB/Windows and the problem went away and TB includes 4 other IMAP email accounts (which do not have "all mail").
Just a reminder I do not have a problem in Mac OS X's with gmail in smaller partitions.
My MacPro has 64Gb of Ram and two 6 core Intel Xeon Processors.
