The latest versions have new logos for Windows. The one used for quickstart next
to the start button in windows looks almost like random pixels. You have to
enlarge it to see what it should be. There should be (as before) a clear picture
which is usable even for small sizes.

-> REOPENING
Might be creating a mess here, but I changed my mind. Bug 159407 is really about
returning to the old icons, being able to select new ones and the fact that the
detail on the icons don't scale well (even at full colour). I don't feel it
could be "fixed".
According to the screenshot attached, this bug is specifically about how bad the
small icon looks at low colours (i.e. 256 colours).
As usual, if anyone disagrees just undo what I've changed.

Marcus, you have a point here. As the screenshot shows, if you don't allow
windows to use full colors for icons, it renders horribly. Also with full colors
there are far too many details to scale down to the size of the icon. Especially
problematic is the background image to our little dinosaur. So the suggestion is
to include a low color low size icon to the icon set which is clear enough.
Looking at http://mozilla.org/images/mozilla-16.png this could be a solution.

Suggestion for Windows icon containing 16-colour 32x32 and 16x16 versions, as
well as the original 256-colour set. (I can't get at the existing file, myself,
so I pieced this one together from scratch. Does anyone know what the existing
icon's name is?)
Anyway, try it out and see if it works better at low colours. I kept changes to
a minimum (i.e. the background box is still there) because I believe it's more
likely to get fixed that way.

See the following for a way to fix 95/98/2000 to display 256 colour tray icons
properly:
http://www.dr-hoiby.com/TrayIconIn256Color/index.html
I tried the manual method ("how to patch your...") with great success on 98se.
Mozilla, OO.org and a few others now look "right" (eg mozilla's icon now looks
like attachment #2 [details] [diff] [review]..).
