There are situations where Thunderbird malfunctions and only a new profile help. Migrating accounts, mail, address books and other settings to a new profile is painful, see for example bug 177175 comment #380.
Thunderbird should provide a function to remove detritus from a profile, like the "refresh profile" function in Firefox. Some ideas where captured in bug 584014 comment #85 and below.

A refresh profile feature would be immensely useful, when helping users to solve (weird) problems!
In the German Thunderbird forum www.thunderbird-mail.de we often advise users to try to reproduce a problem in safe mode. But if the problem persists, it is quite often necessary for the user to start with a new profile.
The problem then is, that the user must setup Thunderbird from scratch - which can be quite error prone and time consuming. Also the user is often pretty much forced to copy some files from the old profile into the new profile, e.g. address books, messages, passwords, etc.
Having a single-click solution to create a new profile and import, e.g. accounts, messages, passwords, contacts and calendars, from the old profile into the new profile, would make this process so much easier. (Just like it is in Firefox now!)
