We just shipped flatpak support for Linux and this offers Linux users a simpler way to install Firefox. Can we please update https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux to include the option to install with Flatpak?
The current simplest way to access our flatpak is through https://flathub.org/apps/details/org.mozilla.firefox where the installation procedure is detailed.
Thanks for the heads up. I've updated this article to include the Flatpak option: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux
Hello, I have two questions:
-
I saw that the page on FlatHub is in English: is the Firefox version downloadable from there localized?
-
The package manager periodically (some time after Mozilla releases) delivers updates to the product. Does the Flatpak option maintain the browser version up-to-date ? Or is the user supposed to periodically check the FlatHub page and reinstall the product?
If it is not like this, I think that both the points should be covered in the article.
Thanks for the attentions.

I'll NI Mihai here since he's checking on (1) with FlatHub.
Regarding (2) - updates atre automatic, no need for the user to reinstall.

Hello, I have two questions:

The page is in English for all the apps in Flatpaks so yeah, that's limitation from the Flathub server-side as far as I can tell. With respect to localization, yes, we're actually building and shipping a "multi-locale" flatpak. Flathub then is smart to handle updates and packages to users. Whenever a user installs flatpak (whether is doing that via the command line or via the Flathub url link), somewhere under the hood, the OS locale is being checked (OS locale and not the browser accept language header) and Flathub only sends the locales that share the same prefix. So for example I have LANG=en_US.UTF-8
so I’ll get all the locales that have the common prefix (len(prefix)=2) with en
which are en-CA
, en-GB
and a bunch of others.
If users want to download specific locales, it can be done manually via:
flatpak update --subpath= org.mozilla.firefox.Locale # will install all of them
flatpak update --subpath=/fr org.mozilla.firefox.Locale # for specific installation of french locale for example
- The package manager periodically (some time after Mozilla releases) delivers updates to the product. Does the Flatpak option maintain the browser version up-to-date ? Or is the user supposed to periodically check the FlatHub page and reinstall the product?
As Romain said, yes, updates are automatic, no need for user to reinstall.
If it is not like this, I think that both the points should be covered in the article.
Good point.
Feel free to NI again if there's anything I missed.
