Steps to reproduce:

I am using a portable version of seamonkey 2.53_2
The dictionary is installed (see picture in the appendix)
The spell checker does not work, the language is not displayed (see picture in the appendix). Even if I reinstall the language, it does not work.

I suspect it is related to the folder structure in the portable version.

In which folder should the dictionary be copied
german_dictionary_en_en-20180701.1webext.xpi

This problem is also present in older portable versions

I doubt that this one is in the responsibility of SeaMonkey projekt.

The webext version is currently not compatible with 2.53. It will install but fail. Please install the latest non webext version fro now from the add-on manager history. Btw. this issue is documented in the release notes.

Damned, I should have read that "...1webext.xpi"

More or less WONTFIX? or DUP of Bug 1320556?

You should install AMO Browsing for SeaMonkey add-on. Some useful compatibility hints and a big button "See Verison History" will be added to the view at addons.thunderbird.net

I am working on it but needs a few more prerequisites. Probably not before 2.53.5 or .6
