While MSIE allows to assign any Unicode font to any language, with Mozilla one
must use the fonts registered to the correspondent script.
For example, I must use poor old fonts for cyrillic (Charcoal CY and so on),
while most fonts supplied with 10.2 are Unicode.
The multilingual pages look ugly.
The same issue affect all components (mail, etc.).
Of course, I can hack the font and duplicate it assigning another script (I
duplicate original Times New Roman, save it as Times new Roman CY and assign it
to the Cyrillic script), but this is not the way to go.
Unicode must rule at all levels.
Best regards,
Vladimir NOVIKOV

This is an i18n issue rather than a l10n one.

I agree. Non of the Apple provided fonts cover the entire basic CJK Unified
Ideographs, while Bitstream Cyberbit and Arial MS Unicode do. But they can't be
selected in the Chinese Simplified/Traditional sections of the font prefs. The
result is that Chinese pages look like ****, with a mixture of different fonts.
Unfortunately, how fonts actually render seems to have the lowest priority of
all in the Mozilla project. Greek looks like ****, Icelandic looks like ****,
Runic looks like ****, Chinese looks like ****...
I don't know what people make the calls at Mozilla, but they need to understand
that all of these render bugs are a BIG blocker for general Mozilla adoption on
Mac OS X. What might be OK on the dreadful PC really isn't on the Mac. What's
the use of all the standards compliance if the **** fonts don't render
properly? Fonts are everything for a browser, since the main element of a page
is always text. That is why Omniweb is so popular, despite its complete lack of
standards compliance.
Sheesh, get a grip people. Stop **** bitching about splash screens and
"scroll bar color" enhancements and implement ATSUI. Now. Today. Direct all
resources to it and get rid of these blocker bugs.
Sorry for the rant, but this seems to be going nowhere, and I no longer have any
confidence in the Mozilla project.
