Forgot to say I'm on Wayland, using Firefox Wayland, mesa 20.2.0, and have the following config changes:
- media.ffmpeg.vaapi.enabled is true
- media.ffvpx.enabled is false
- gfx.webrender.all is true
- fission.autostart is true

True, I'm using an AMD 5700XT. I think this started happening since wayland/x11 VAAPI code got merged, it's not from a recent change.

The issue occurs a lot when using picture-in-picture mode on Xorg with EGL backend + VAAPI. It's still unchanged with 86 beta 3.
Is this issue known to Robert Mader or Martin Stransky?

This should have been fixed by bug 1684194 (Firefox 88).
