Hello world :-)

I am searching for GMail alternatives. Thunderbird seems most obvious choice.

But it has no message format change on the fly during composition.

I prefer to send/reply/forward Plaintext messages. I have unchecked "edit messages as HTML".

But sometimes I need to send/forward/reply HTML. At the moment Thunderbird does not allow such behavior because it always silently enforces Plaintext formatting even though message is edited/forwarded as HTML.

This is kind of blocker for Thunderbird as the only way to forward HTML messages is to send them as attachment that no one reads anyway.

Please add composition format change on the fly. And send what is already there in the window. Do not change format of the message behind user back. When I see a HTML message in the editor I would like it to be sent HTML. When I see Plaintext message I would like it to be sent Plaintext. As simple as that :-)

Is this functionality possible in Thunderbird as in GMail? If no then Thunderbird is no use.

Dupe of Bug 140800

I prefer to send/reply/forward Plaintext messages. I have unchecked "edit messages as HTML".

But sometimes I need to send/forward/reply HTML.

Hold down the [SHIFT] key while click on "Write" "Reply" "Forward" whatever...
Then your preset changes to the opposite.

At the moment Thunderbird does not allow such behavior because it always silently enforces Plaintext formatting even though message is edited/forwarded as HTML.

There are some options. I would suggest:

Options -> /Composition\ -> HTML Style -> [Send Options]

  • [X] Send message as plain text if possible
  • [Ask me what to do]

Is this functionality possible in Thunderbird as in GMail? If no then Thunderbird is no use.

Thank you @Alfred! Indeed I had this setting "always send as plaintext" and I have switched to "ask me what to do". Not easy to find, but not a bug either. Thank you! :-)
