User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/89.0.4381.6 Safari/537.36
Steps to reproduce:
Opened a page containing one or more H.264 / mp4 videos (such as Facebook or YouTube).
Example page for testing: https://tekeye.uk/html/html5-video-test-page
Actual results:
The tab where the page is loaded, crashes.

Expected results:
It should be possible to open the page and play the video.
If I start firefox-nightly with MOZ_LOG=PlatformDecoderModule:5, I get the following log while trying to play a video:

After that, the Firefox tab with the video in it crashes, and it asks me to file a crash report.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Core::Audio/Video: Playback' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Hi,
I wonder if the tab crashs immediately after the page is loaded? Or it crashed after you started any video on the page?
Would you mind to provide the information from your about:support
page? And would you mind try to capture the log with MOZ_LOG=MediaDecoder:5
as well?
Will it help if you disable the pref media.rdd-process.enabled
?

As for the behavior during opening the test page:
The test page gets fully loaded, including the player controls for the embedded video. The tab (not the entire Firefox) crashes as soon as the preview image for the video is about to be loaded.
Finally, changed media.rdd-process.enabled
to false
but that did not change anything.

Indeed, disabling media.ffmpeg.vaapi.enabled
seems to prevent Firefox from crashing.
At least, on the test page at https://tekeye.uk/html/html5-video-test-page, the video can then be played. So the crash unequivocally seems to be related to VAAPI hardware acceleration.

Just a thought: If I am not mistaken, VAAPI is Intel-specific. In systems without an Intel graphics card, VAAPI calls need to be mapped to the corresponding functions specific to the graphics adapter present in the system.
For Nvidia, this appears to be VDPAU.
In Arch based Linux distributions, there is a mapper package named libva-vdpau-driver
which, according to its description, serves as the VDPAU backend for VA API
.
As the generic version of this package seems to be problematic for some programs, there are patched versions, for example this one:
libva-vdpau-driver-chromium 0.7.4-8
VDPAU backend for VA API. (special version for chromium)
Perhaps, there are some special aspects to be considered for Firefox so possibly there is a need for a libva-vdpau-driver-chromium-firefox
package.

There is also VA-API support for Gallium3D-based drivers in Mesa, so it should work with radeon
and nouveau
drivers.
For Nvidia, this appears to be VDPAU.
Proprietary NVIDIA drivers have no native support for VA-API. And although translation layer is available (libva-vdpau-driver), it won't work with Firefox, since the latter relies on DMA-BUF interface for transferring frame data between browser components. DMA-BUF interfaces in the Linux kernel are GPL-only, so proprietary NVIDIA drivers can't use them. No DMA-BUF — no hw-decoding in Firefox.

vdpau-va-driver code was created about a decade ago when vaGetDisplayDRM()
wasn't a thing. Latter doesn't require a connection to a X server, so libva keeps the pointer nulled in its internal structures. vdpau-va-driver assumes the pointer will never be NULL, and tries to dereference it.

No, I don't think that's feasible.
The fix for the vdpau-va-driver code is trivial, and I even sent the patch to the most alive fork I found: https://github.com/xtknight/vdpau-va-driver-vp9/pull/14. As VP9 is widely used on the Internet, it's more likely for users that still need vdpau-va-driver
to use the vdpau-va-driver-vp9
fork.
