The Glean Interface For Firefox Telemetry (GIFFT) allows to mirror data to Telemetry for data collections that have been migrated to Glean. If we migrate AUSTLMY to GIFFT, we can keep the existing data collection (if we want to) and also include that data in the metrics submitted (via Glean) in --backgroundtask backgroundupdate. That would be nice, but it's not going to block our initial background update release.
