User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:88.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/88.0

Steps to reproduce:

Upgraded Firefox Developer Edition from version 88 to version 89.
My system is Archlinux on AsRock Q1900TM-ITX (Intel Gen 7 onboard graphics).

Actual results:

Glitches on the screen: torn text selections, torn button edges, etc when hardware acceleration is turned on ("Use recommended performance settings" is checked).

Firefox 88 with the same settings does not have this problem.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Core::Graphics: WebRender' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → Graphics: WebRender
Product: Firefox → Core

Can you please attach your "about:support" information with HW-accel enabled so we can see what the buggy configuration is?

I've had the same glitches running Firefox 88 on Fedora 34.

But similar glitches were also present on mcpelauncher (Minecraft Bedrock Launcher) making me doubt it is a driver/kernel issue.

I was able to fix glitches in both the game and Firefox by downgrading to kernel 5.9.0, From my testing the glitches are also absent in previous kernel versions as tested in live sessions.

Forgot to mention my CPU is Intelยฎ Pentium(R) CPU N3540 also running integrated graphics
As shown I think is a kernel/driver issue on the newer kernels including 5.11 as I've seen similar glitches on other programs. Also fixed by downgrading to older kernels.

I think I have the same issue but for me, it appeared after Firefox update to v. 88.0. One common thing I can see with the attached about:support of OP is that it seems we both have Intel Bay Trail integrated HD graphics card.

Downgrading to v. 87.0 fixes the issue for me.

My system:

  • Chromebook Acer CB3-131, CPU Intel Celeron N2840, GPU Intel HD Graphics (Bay Trail), RAM 4GB DDR3, Storage 32GB eMMC, Bios coreboot MrChromebox-4.12
  • Arch Linux XFCE (everything up to date with Linux Kernel 5.10.34-1-lts) and Firefox 88.0.1 (64-bit).
  • Installed graphics/video related packages: xf86-video-intel (1:2.99.917+916+g31486f40-1) mesa (21.0.3-3) libva (2.11.0-1) libva-intel-driver (2.4.1-1) xorg-server (1.20.11-1)

This looks like a driver bug. The best next steps are probably to file an upstream mesa bug and post a link to it here.

Firefox 88 with the same settings does not have this problem.
Firefox 88 with the same settings does not actually use hw-acceleration.

Summary: Hardware acceleration in Firefox 89 causes glitches → Hardware acceleration in Firefox 89 causes glitches on baytrail
Depends on: 1712144

mt45, could you post the output of xrandr --listproviders here? This might be a duplicate of bug 1710400

Flags: needinfo?(mt45)

Quoting comment 6:

Installed graphics/video related packages: xf86-video-intel

And quoting the related Mesa issue:

driver: loaded: intel

Thus closing as a dup of bug 1710400
